The Lewis Center, Thunderbird Campus, is home to a T-40 flight simulator used for aviation instruction through the AAE as well as our outreach programs. Volunteers are trained and certified in the use of the simulator in order to instruct interested future pilots.
Aerospace Education Excellence Award Program (AEX)
Each year, the Lewis Center, in partnership with the Civil Air Patrol,
offers a six workshop program for community students grades 5 through
12. Thirty students participate in this fun-filled, hands-on
educational program meeting once a month from November through April.
This program is provided to excite and motivate students in the science
of aviation and awareness of aerospace careers.
Each 2-hour workshop focuses on a specific aspect of aerospace/aviation.
A "field day" is also included in the program, with students visiting
an aerospace/aviation facility. Upon completion of the program, students
are presented with a certificate from the Lewis Center and the Civil
Air Patrol. Each registered participant receives an AEX T-shirt and upon
completion receives a certificate for a FREE airplane ride! Pilots who
are part of the Lewis Center Volunteer Aviation Team generously provide
airplane rides.
Registration begins each year in October with the first workshop
beginning in November. Any questions regarding this program can be
directed to Laura Unferdorfer at 760-946-5414 ext. 277.
