Special Mission Campaign:
The Galileo-Jupiter Microwave Observing Campaign is a new opportunity for this fall! The Galileo Spacecraft will be making a flyby of Jupiter’s moon Amalthea on November 5th, 2002. The spacecraft will be measuring the electrons and protons in Jupiter’s magnetic field.
GAVRT teachers and students will be an integral part of this mission by contributing their Jupiter Quest data collection runs via their classroom computers. The focus of the GAVRT measurements will be to monitor the radio brightness of the radiation belts and to note any changes that
collaboration with the “in-situ” measurements taken by the spacecraft, ground-based observations will be conducted. The Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico will be observing the radiation belts with high spatial resolution during the flyby. Measurements of a shorter duration will be conducted on November 1st, 8th, and 11th, as well as two additional dates to be scheduled in December
may occur. The VLA will be making new maps of the microwave brightness, comparing those to maps from the past, and correlating the maps with GAVRT beaming curve data (S-band flux). The months of October, November, and December are critical for the NASA data collection process.

How do you get involved? Contact Kelli Cole at the Operations Control Center (OCC) at 1 (866) 458-7483 ext. 268. No additional training is necessary, as you can conduct your Jupiter Quest antenna runs as you have in the past!
