Technology Requirements
Technical Requirements for Schools participating in current & future projects & campaigns:
- A higher resolution monitor (1024x768 or higher) is preferred. Computer must have CD-ROM drive.
- A computer with at least 128 MB RAM, 1 GHz processor, and a dedicated Internet connection of at least 256 Kbps. The computer must have Sun’s Java Run Time environment (version >1.4.2), available from http://www.java.com, as well as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 (or higher) or Mozilla 1.4 (or higher, freely available from http://www.mozilla.org). Mac users should have OS X 10.3 or higher running a version of Mozilla.
- The software runs via a web-based Java VNC application. The computer MUST be able to access TCP ports 5801 and 5901 on http://reddish1.lewiscenter.org and http://reddish2.lewiscenter.org. Most schools have NAT based firewall, which works fine as long as they are state-ful. Some schools have connected through a Squid Proxy server, however, this is not recommended or supported.
- Schools unable to meet the hardware or software requirements may still be able to connect using a stand-alone VNC viewer application (available from http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html), however, the network requirements are the same. Macintosh users running < OS X will encounter problems and are not supported.
