Come be part of the Lewis Center volunteer team!
Our volunteers are at the heart of our Local Outreach programs. They help bring learning to life for students from the High Desert and beyond through hands-on activities, engaging demonstrations, field trips, special events, and educational programs. Whether you're sharing something you already know or learning something completely new, you'll have the opportunity to make a lasting impression on a young learner.
No Experience? No Problem!
You don't have to be a teacher, scientist, or expert to volunteer. Enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to share your time are all you need to get started. We provide training for volunteer assignments, so you'll feel prepared and supported every step of the way.

Find Your Way to Get Involved
There are many ways to share your time and talents within Local Outreach at the Lewis Center:
- Assist during Mineral City or AVCI field trips
- Lead hands-on educational programs at our campuses
- Bring STEM and educational activities to local classrooms
- Use your sewing or carpentry skills to complete needed projects
- Prepare and maintain program supplies and materials
- Help develop new programs, activities, and learning experiences
- Assist with special events and community activities
- Join HIDAS and help host star parties at our Luz Observatory
- Support our environmental and conservation programs
- Share your professional skills, hobbies, or expertise with students and the community
Whether you can volunteer regularly or occasionally, there's a place for you at the Lewis Center.
Ready to Join the Adventure?
Becoming a Lewis Center volunteer is easy. Start by completing our Volunteer Interest Form, and a member of our team will contact you about available opportunities.
All volunteers who work with students must become LCER-approved volunteers. This process includes:
- Attend a Lewis Center volunteer workshop, available monthly
- Department of Justice (DOJ) background clearance
- TB risk assessment questionnaire
- Training for your specific volunteer assignment
