Local Programs

The Lewis Center for Educational Research extends learning beyond the classroom through hands-on science, environmental, engineering, astronomy, and social studies experiences. Our Local Outreach programs connect students and community members with authentic learning opportunities that inspire curiosity, encourage problem-solving, and build a deeper understanding of the world around us. Programs complement California’s educational standards, including the Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.

Since opening in 1990, the Lewis Center has welcomed more than 200,000 students, teachers, and families to participate in field trips, mentorship programs, environmental education, astronomy, and other hands-on learning experiences.

Our Local Outreach programs are made possible through the dedication of community volunteers who generously share their knowledge, skills, and passion for learning. Our volunteers include educators, scientists, engineers, business professionals, and community members who help bring meaningful educational experiences to students throughout the High Desert and beyond.

High Desert Astronomical Society (HiDAS)

Explore the wonders of the night sky with the High Desert Astronomical Society. Through astronomy programs, observing opportunities, and community events, participants can discover planets, stars, galaxies, and other objects beyond our world.
 
Mojave Tui Chub

Mojave Tui Chub

Learn about the endangered Mojave Tui Chub and the conservation efforts helping protect this unique High Desert species. Students and visitors explore the importance of habitat, biodiversity, and environmental stewardship through hands-on experiences.
Engineering Mentorship Program

Engineering Mentorship Program

The Engineering Mentorship Program connects students with professional engineers and STEM mentors to explore engineering through real-world projects and challenges. Students develop technical skills, problem-solving strategies, teamwork, and confidence as they experience the engineering design process.
 
Tortoise Terrace

Tortoise Terrace

Tortoise Terrace provides an opportunity to learn about the desert tortoise and the unique adaptations that allow it to survive in the High Desert. Through observation and educational activities, visitors gain a greater appreciation for native wildlife and the importance of protecting desert habitats.

Wildlands

The Wildlands provides a living laboratory for exploring the High Desert ecosystem and its native plants and wildlife. Through hands-on investigation and environmental education, students develop an understanding of local habitats and the importance of conservation and stewardship.
